PORKY baby boomers are costing Australia almost $4 billion a year, University
of Adelaide demographer Professor Graeme Hugo says.
Prof Hugo will lead a $641,000 project to develop strategies to address the
obesity problem, focusing on improving diets and increasing physical activity
levels, AdelaideNow reports
Among boomers, 72 per cent of men and 58 per cent of women are overweight.
"The unprecedented high levels of obesity among Australian baby boomers is
an issue of national importance," Prof Hugo said.
"Moreover, the window of opportunity to intervene and reduce obesity among
this group before they enter retirement is rapidly closing.
"There are no silver bullet solutions to modify diet and exercise, but we
need to consider individuals in their home, community and workplace."
The three-year project has been funded by the Australian Research Council.
